Besides the usual sales channels – from the farm, via retailers, restaurants and exports – certain exclusive bottlings or vintages of Grangehurst wines are available on wine auctions. The two most important wine auctions on the South African wine calendar are the Nederburg Auction and the Cape Winemakers Guild Auction.
Cape Winemakers Guild
The Cape Winemakers Guild is an organization of 36 winemakers. Established in 1982, the CWG has three main purposes:
|| technical tastings which encompass an exchange of ideas and knowledge between the members;
|| the CWG Auction and related events;
||a Development Trust which provides educational opportunities for children from agricultural communities.
The Development Trust – in Association with Nedbank – is making a difference to the lives of many youngsters who are studying at agricultural schools in the Cape. Funds have also been provided for school building projects, and the CWG has recently embarked on a “Protégé Programme” to develop the skills and experiences of young winemakers.
See www.capewinemakersguild.com for further details on the CWG and its various activities.
Membership of the Guild lies with the winemaker – not the winery – and Grangehurst’s winemaker Jeremy Walker was invited to join the CWG in 1996. A complete list of Grangehurst CWG wines is available on this website - click “here” for details. CWG wines are produced by the individual members specifically for the auction, and must be approved during a blind tasting of the wines by the CWG members. The wines that are selected for the auction are not available for sale from the farm - they are only available at the auction – or if they are resold by any of the auction buyers. The Auction is open to the public as well as to trade buyers, and interested buyers can contact the CWG for further details (Tel + 27 (0)21 852-0408 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org).
Another important event on the SA wine calendar is The Nederburg Auction which has been held every year since 1975. Attendance of the Nederburg Auction is by invitation only, and only open to trade buyers - private buyers can arrange to buy wines via a trade buyer, or they may buy the wines off retail shelves after the auction.
